Artist Q&A

Can you tell us a little about your artistic background and how you became involved in the Recovery Cards Project?

I was a high school English teacher for ten years before moving to art full-time. I love teaching artists of all ages around Denver and hosting public art events. The Recovery Cards Project application was sent to me by a friend, and I was immediately impressed with the mission and its use of art by local artists!

Do you have a personal connection to substance use disorder or mental health struggles?

I, like most people, unfortunately, have had loved ones who have struggled with addiction in a variety of ways. While not experiencing addiction myself, I have seen the toll that addiction can have on a person and what it can cost them.

What inspired the design and message of your card?

I love using imagery of the phases of the moon. To me, it signifies the ever-changing dynamics of life and how nature allows us to begin anew.

What do you hope someone in recovery feels when they receive your card?

Sometimes the actions and words of someone experiencing addiction can deeply hurt the ones they love most. It can feel impossible to forgive yourself, but self-love helps you take more control of your life and decide that you deserve better. I hope people are reminded to give themselves the grace of a new beginning to each day.

Why do you think greeting cards are a powerful tool for supporting people in recovery and community?

I love that the cards are made available free to the public and give people an opportunity to connect and support one another. That love, along with a lot of community support, can empower people to lead a happier life.

How do you see art playing a role in reducing stigma around addiction and recovery?

I see art as a tool. A tool to express love, to work through trauma, or even navigate the challenges of recovery itself. I am inspired by artists who use their craft to discuss their struggles and introduce audiences to stories that can break down the shame and stigma associated with this subject.
